Description

Deep in the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle, an Atlantean science research had been established when an unknown substance had been discovered in the area. Atlan Or'yn Marius, the King of Atlantis, assigned his student and charge Garth to join the research team as part of his education; his closest friends La'gan and Tula came with him. When the long polar night descended upon the research facility, the trio of young Atlanteans ventured into the subaquatic ice caves of the area. They followed a trail of the glowing substance deeper into the cave, until they found an Atlantean woman frozen in the ice! They had a thermal cutting tool on their person, so they melted the ice and freed the woman's body. To their astonishment, the woman was still alive and awoke right in front of them! Able to talk, the woman tells them she's too weak to be moved, so they can't take her to the base camp's medical area. The woman, Gamemnae, explains that she was persecuted for witchcraft by the Atlantean people and frozen as an eternal imprisonment. Garth and his friends deduce that she was born centuries ago in what is called the Obsidian Age of Atlantis. Gamemnae then explains that her frozen body was exiled to the Arctic with a canister containing the only remaining samples of Orichalcum, a substance she invented that was considered the Atlantean equivalent of witchcraft and would have been used as an innovation in building construction. Gamemnae asked them to not bring her back before Atlantean civilization, as she is not mentally prepared yet; La'gan expressed his concerns, but Garth and Tula agreed that her invention could be beneficial to Atlantean society. They agree to let Gamemnae rest where they found her and not alert her presence to the research camp. She asks to keep their thermal cutter on her, because who knows what could happen? The three young Atlanteans leave... but Gamemnae stands up and uses the thermal cutter on another wall of ice...
The next morning (author's note: this is taking place in the Arctic Circle, so it's still night out for the next 24 hours or so) as the crew of the research facility awoke, Garth and his friends returned to Gamemnae's location. With their help, she found within the ice wall the large canister containing the Orichalcum, which was leaking but still had plenty inside. That's when La'gan noticed two depressions in the ice that were roughly the size of humanoids, and the ice inside looked like it was melted. Garth and Tula talked to Gamemnae and convinced her to come back to the base camp with them. La'gan said he was going to go ahead of them.
When they returned, the base was dark and quiet. Garth and Tula wondered what was happening, but then Gamemnae struck her in the back of the head and pulled a knife on Garth. Garth fought back until two more Atlanteans in old garb attacked him from behind. The two, Sela and The Whaler, tied up Garth and Tula with the researchers they didn't kill. Gamemnae told them to do ahead with “phase 2” of their plan while she searches the camp for La'gan. They noticed that one of the high-speed transports was missing; they concluded that he may have escaped back to Atlantis, so Sela and Whaler took another transport after him. La'gan was aware of Gamemnae's cohorts' attack on the research base, so he snuck back in and took back a transport vessel to get back to Atlantis for help. He met with Atlan Or'yn himself (whom the surface-worlders call Aquaman), let him know of the attack so soldiers can intervene, and asked if there was a file of any kind on an Atlantean woman named Gamemnae; the central computer of the royal castle revealed a history file on Gamemnae that said that she created a deadly toxin called “Orichalcum”, which instantly vaporizes when exposed to any level of heat, and she and her fellow conspirators tried to use it to annihilate a surface dweller city. Sela and the Whaler were found by Atlantean soldiers and they began fighting; Aquaman intervened and subdued both of them. He, La'gan, and a platoon of soldiers traveled back to the research base to rescue the tied-up personnel. They told Aquaman that Garth and Tula undid their bindings and went off to find Gamemnae, but they don't know which direction they went. Using his neuropathic headband, Aquaman saw into the memories of all nearby sea-life to determine where Gamemnae could be. Onboard a human shipping vessel, Gamemnae had boarded it, killed all the humans onboard, and chained the container full of Orichalcum to the bow with the intention of ramming it into the coast of a nearby human city, thereby vaporizing the chemical weapon with heat and killing as many humans as possible in the toxic fumes. Garth and Tula snuck onboard and confronted Gamemnae. Before she could kill one of them, Aquaman sunk the ship with his hydrokinetic implant before it could do the damage she intended.
With Gamemnae and her co-conspirators captured, Aquaman released the bodies of the human sailors back to their governments, rescued the other Atlanteans, unfroze the remaining three conspirators to stand trial with Gamemnae, Sela, and Whaler, and safely destroyed what remained of the Orichalcum. When Or'yn tried to talk to Garth, he had exiled himself out of shame, leaving before Or'yn could tell him he doesn't blame Garth for Gamemnae's actions...

Notes:
* Tula and La'gan are based on Aquagirl and Lagoon Boy from the main comics.
** La'gan is as human-looking as any Atlantean in Absolute DC, with his amphibious parts echoing Lagoon Boy's.
* Gamemnae and her 5 other conspirators, all Atlanteans here, are based on The League of Ancients from the main comics, from the storyline “The Obsidian Age”.
** The 3 other still-frozen conspirators are based on The Anointed One, Tezumak, and Rama Khan.
* Based on both the ancient legends and it's inclusion in DC Comics, Orichalcum is here a liquid chemical weapon instead of a mineral or metal.
* Gamemnae wanted to kill the surface worlders for their now-forgotten persecution of Atlanteans.
* Whaler's face markings in the comics are replaced with piercings on his face.
