Description

At the Fortress of Solitude, deep in the frozen North, the members of the Justice League convened to discuss the threat of the terrorist organization Algol and the Dark Side, the evil beings that Algol worship and seek to bring back to Earth for conquest. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman all arrived, but Doctor Jones stayed within the bowels of the Fortress out of shame of his alien mutation, which had progressed even further. Batman convinced the rest of the League to let Jones stay out, and just to brief him on the general parts of the discussion if he decides to help.

According to Batman's and Superman's research into Algol, they have existed for as long as their leader, the woman known as Ra's Algol, has lived the life of an immortal. In the times before recorded history, the Dark Side, a group of powerful, demonic sorcerers and warriors, ruled over many primordial nations until they were banished to a pocket dimension by the Lords of Order and Chaos. 600 years ago, Algol discovered a prophecy left behind by the Dark Side that speaks of a repeating cycle of heroes defeating the Dark Side and banishing them back to their prison. By creating great events of disorder, chaos, and hoplessness can they empower the leader of the Dark Side, Uxas the Wrathful, to once again escape. According to records kept by the former Lord Usud-Adam, recovered by Superman from the Lords' ruined citadel in Lebanon, a group of around seven heroes had convened to defeat Algol each time and prevented the Dark Side's return. In the 1480s, Algol controlled the Spanish Inquisition to create intense fear and paranoia, but they were defeated and dismantled by a group led by the British knight known as Ser Ystin. In the 1660s, they caused the Great Plague and Great Fire of London, but order was kept thanks to the efforts of the dashing British soldier Cpt. Richard Plante and his allies. In 1861, the exiled tyrant Napoleon Bonaparte, a pawn of Algol, was killed by assassins led by the spymaster Nemesis. In 1888, the serial killer known as Jack the Ripper was brought to justice by the Sovereign Society of Venturers, led by The Ghost in Grey. During WWII, Algol's latest attempt was thwarted by the All-Star Squadron, the Allied Forces' special warfare team. In the 1960s, the Metal Men, a group of battlearmor-wearing geniuses, were the ones to defeat Algol. The team figured that they are the next to participate in the prophecy, and then speculated whether or not they can destroy the Dark Side this time, and for good, or if they will only be able to delay their return for who know's how long...

Just then, the walls of the Fortress exploded, and several people arrived to confront the Justice League. The lead was a man who was wearing a black version of Superman's costume. Superman recoginzed him as Russian military officer Dmitri Avruskin, and tried to reason with him, but he spoke with the voice of General Zod, Jor-El's old enemy from their destroyed homeworld. Zod explained that he survived their last battle, and had been in Russia's custody ever since. Until, that is, Algol "bought" him from the Russians to lead their Injustice League.

The fight between the two Leagues raged throughout the Fortress. There was Superman Vs. Zod, of course, but other fighters were also present. Harley Quinn fought Batman, seeking revenge against him for the murder of her love, The Joker. Vixen fought Wonder Woman, reluctantly working for Algol in exchange for a cure for her animal-like powers. The Flash fought Solomon Grundy, a large, mentally-unstable, savage zombie who used to be a soldier named Cyrus Gold. Green Lantern battled Parallax, a former Green Lantern named Hal Jordan seeking revenge against the Spectrum Lantern Alliance. And Aquaman was outnumbered by Siren, a vicious Atlanteanassassin and sister of his beloved Mera, and Firebrand, a mutated anarchist with fire powers. The heroes were outmatched until Dr. Jones arrived to help Aquaman defeat Firebrand. Needless to say, the heroes defeated the Injustice League and locked them up. Zod, locked in a chamber generating red solar energy, which negates his powers, and Parallax, stripped of his Lantern, were taken to the Guardian Council by Green Lantern. Harley Quinn was taken by Batman to their home city of Pittsburgh, PA. Siren was taken by Aquaman to the prison that Atlantis uses. Grundy, Vixen, and Firebrand were kept in the Fortress by Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Dr. Jones; Grundy and Firebrand were frozen by Superman's frost breath, but Vixen was treated more linently because she was forced to work for villains. Mari Jiwe, which is Vixen's real name, explained that she overheard that the American government's CADMUS agency, which controlled the hospital/prison that she, Grundy, and Firebrand were locked up in, works for Algol. And that Co-Director Amanda Waller is the second-in-command after Ra's Algol.

That's when Diana, Barry, and Dr. Jones heard Superman screaming! They rushed to a chamber, but were cut off by a force field. The Legion, time-traveling metahumans who were out to kill Superman, had just succeeded! Cosmic, the leader, holding one of their krypton-molecule laser rifles, explained that killing Superman, who is his father, would prevent the Dark Side from leaving Earth and subjugating their home planets in the far future. He ordered the cyborg Five to drop the force field so that the Legion can deal with the rest of the League promptly, but Five refused. A triangle of diodes emerged upon Five's forehead and revealed that Brainiac is now in control. Brainiac/Five activated the Legion's time-warp tech and sent them back to the future and then detonated an explosive that annihilated the Fortress. Brainiac/Five left, his mission to kill Superman completed. Wonder Woman lifted up a huge chunk of crystal off of them and Flash, Vixen, and Jones helped her recover Superman's body. They tried to call Batman, Aquaman, and Green Lantern, but could only reach Aquaman. Superman's dead, Batman and GL are probably missing, and Algol is still on the loose. If Algol learns that they've been weakened, even by outside parties, they could take advantage of it and finalize their master plan. The Justice League needs help, and fast!

They returned to Kansas and buried the body of Superman, aka Jor-El, aka John Kent, next to his deceased wife, Martha. As they mourned the fallen, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Dr. Jones, and Vixen encountered another time traveler and his allies! Their names are Orion, Shiloh, and Barda, and they are here to help them defeat the Dark Side.

Notes:
* One of the Dark Side's members, Desaad the Envious, is already out, and serving as liason between Ra's Algol and Uxas.
* Ser Ystin is based on the Shining Knight from the original comics.
* Richard Plante is based on Lionheart.
* The "Sovereign Society of Venturers" is based on the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Think "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen".
** The Ghost in Grey is, obviously, based on the Gray Ghost.
* In their fight back in Russia, Superman accidentally imprisoned the mind of Avruskin instead of Zod's within the Yebioti containment system. The guilt of this weakened Superman against the Legion's ambush.
* Cyrus Gold, now mentally-imbalanced, thinks his name is Solomon Grundy, after a poem from a book he's been trying to read while locked up in the hospital CADMUS controls.
** Formerly a member of the villainous Secret Six, Cyrus was mutated into his giant form due to exposure to Lazarus, Algol's experimental immortality serum.
* Being a killer for hire, Siren, real name: Hila, was hired by Orm, Aquaman's evil brother and new member of Algol, to work with the Injustice League.
* Firebrand actually buys into the word of Algol, and joined them whole-heartedly.
** Firebrand and Grundy escaped the destroyed Fortress, with Grundy swimming to shore with Firebrand on his back.
* Orion, Shiloh, and Barda will explain their backstory, and how it connects to The Legion and the Dark Side, in the next episode...
